On April 16, 2026, a workshop titled “Teaching Critical Thinking and Independent Learning Skills” was successfully held at Lac Hong University. The event featured a special guest speaker, Dr. James Underwood – Academic Director for English Language Assessment and Coaching programs at the University of Cambridge (UK).

A key highlight of the workshop was the participation of Ms. Doan Kim Phung (M.A.) – a lecturer from the Faculty of English Language (FEL), who served as the Moderator and Connecting Speaker. With her fluent linguistic skills and solid pedagogical foundation, Ms. Phung played a crucial role in:
- Facilitating effective access for students to academic theories presented by the British expert.
- Bridging theoretical concepts of critical thinking with business realities and future career paths, helping learners recognize the vital importance of these skills in a global professional environment.
Under the guidance of Dr. James Underwood, faculty and students explored an inspiring academic space that completely transformed their approach to information in the digital age:
- Dr. James Underwood emphasized that critical thinking is not merely about asking questions but involves respecting diverse perspectives to make decisions based on sound reasoning.
- Participants were guided on applying the principles of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner to foster constructive and clear discussions.
- The discussion highlighted that critical thinking is the core tool for independent self-directed learning; conversely, self-study without a critical lens can easily lead to errors in information filtering.

The workshop went beyond theory, providing a vibrant practical environment for FEL students through several activities:
- Students practiced generating bold ideas and defending their arguments with sharp, evidence-based reasoning.
- Direct practice in data classification based on levels of Vital - Important - Relevant.
The event, hosted by the International Relations Department, delivered invaluable international academic insights. The success of the workshop once again affirms the integration capabilities and the relentless learning spirit of the lecturers and students of the Faculty of English Language at Lac Hong University.
